Pit bulls – don’t discount them – they are adoptable

Just wandering around my email for early morning news and ASPCA is one of my fave sites!  I am always looking for a  good heart, success, and story to warm my heart and share for educational use.  I found one today!

Click the link below and read about the pit bull who is the good will ambassador for this week.

She’s Elsie, the good will ambassador for this week for ASPCA

Briefly, it is a story of Elsie, a pit bull waiting to be adopted for seven months from the Western PA Humane Society.. She was gentle and knows her basic obedience commands  but had not found her forever home until Becky Torbin came along. However, her husband, Herb, had other thoughts.

“His harsh words were, ‘Have you lost your mind? She’s a pit bull!’” remembers Becky. “I looked him straight in the eye and answered, ‘Trust me on this one.’”

However, goodness won over and Herb would not have it any  any other pup.  Herb was diagnosed with cancer and Elsie was the only one Herb wanted near after his chemo therapy, allowing her to rest on top of his chest.  He is  her biggest fan.

I too before thought how could I ever consider a pit bull  for adoption in my own family, full of  other life, the flock of parrots, kaley corgi, my Dan, and with a toddler.

However, since I have met so many pit bulls personally and read about them in the news in good light…  i no longer believe a pit bull should be singled out just because of it’s variety.

new friend

Hi! –it’s me, Jonny on the left and Grace on the right! We write on the Vick dog blog! You can read our stuff  (link on the bottom)  We are some of the Vick’s dogs that were saved.

Just happens that last night, I was walking/reading at Fry’s electronics – a Dan store, but I go along always, and picked up Cesar Millans new book ……Member of the Family and briefly read about  how to pick  the right dog for adoption and about his beloved pit bull, Daddy.

My main point is, all dogs should be viewed as individuals, and that is how a dog adoption should be.

Someday, I will get another dog, and yes, somehow another corgi, a cardigan, will come into my life.  But a big part of me wants to adopt and rescue a dog that really  was looking for his forever home and not presented with all the lucky cards on his plate – a pit bull, or a black dog, or a dog too big for the average family……???   The time will come, and quite frankly, I think the dog will just sorta happen due to my connection here on the internet and love of all dogs.

Just don’t discount a dog because it happens to be a pit bull.

PS, one came to my door the other day…. big, sturdy, a male “intact” pit bull.  I was a little apprehensive at first.  Kaley ran to the door, with baby gate in place and barked and barked and barked.  The pit bull, named, Cracky (Dan wasn’t so wild about the name, either)(we called on his tag to let his owner know he wandered to us).  This pit bull male was  the sweetest big pup, and kaley corgi must  have known for she was not a least bit threatened.
